Blog: A quick overview of the site redesign

Are you one of those people who likes "new", like the smell of recently printed magazines, or the first time wearing new clothes? Well, then today's your day. Admittedly, you can't really wear or smell a website, but you can definitely look at it, and also browse it. So have a look around our brand new website and check out the new features. I hope you like it!

If you're not sure yet if you like it, do give the new look a couple of days to get used to. Design changes can be pretty shocking, but I suspect that most of you will ultimately approve. It's like moving into a different house: the first few nights sleeping in your new bed can be really creepy and weird, but it all turns normal pretty quickly.

So the site looks nicer now. But the redesign is also a great foundation for us to build new features on top of, and some of them we are already introducing today. Check out the site introduction article for some details. Below are a couple of more specific features not yet mentioned by Jack:

International release dates
Yes, we'll finally be tracking multiple releases per game! United States and Europe are the two main territories we'll be keeping an eye on, but we'll often list other more specific territories too. We even thought of an option for digitally distributed releases. The new release dates calendar will now tell you exactly when a game is coming out where, and which companies are publishing it.

Screenshots index
You love screenshots. That's why the latest screenshots can now be conveniently accessed via the screenshots link in the top menu bar. The thumbnails link to full-sized slideshows. There are also slideshows with medium-size images alongside news items, articles and game info pages.

Expanded game info pages
Each game now has its own page showing releases, keywords, related content, external links, system requirements, known technical issues, other games by the same developer, other games in the series, and much more. We have also begun adding PEGI (Europe) and ESRB (United States) age and content ratings to all the games so you can easily find out what horrible depravity they contain. (I'm kidding, but you probably wouldn't want little Billy to play Phantasmagoria .)

Improved search
Even if our site navigation fails you somehow, you'll still be able to find stuff with our new site search, courtesy of an obscure fringe company called "Google". We hear their search algorithms are pretty good — why don't you try it out?

RSS feeds
We've got more RSS feeds than you can shake a stick at. For RSS feed links, and an explanation of what you can do with them, head over to the RSS feeds page.

I hope you like these additions to the site!

We're definitely not planning on stopping here, though. Well, I'm going to stop for a little while at least, as the design and development of the new Adventure Gamers took me about two months of intense work, but there are several other features that we'd like to introduce later. Easily at the top of our personal wish list is a comments system for news, blog posts and articles. Integrating it with the forum accounts is a complicated matter though, so it's something that may have to wait until sometime next year. But I thought you might want to know that we're aware of the total lack of comments features and will address this eventually.

If you're a visitor from the really old days (circa 1998) you might have noticed how we back brought the green background color. That one's for you, guys. (Man, why did I ever do away with that green?)

Got any ideas or constructive comments about the site design? Feel free to drop me a line. I've also made a thread on the forums where you can give feedback.
