Blog: Lost in translation: German rescue party required

Hands up those of you who know what this means:

Kann Sie lesen diesen Satz?

Better yet, hands up those of you can can tell it's a cheaply-online-translated sentence that may very well NOT say what I want it to say?

If your hand is in the air, then... uhhh... I can't see you, but I DO want to hear from you.

If you've been following Adventure Gamers or pretty much just not hiding in a closet for the past week, you'll know that the Games Convention in Leipzig has been taking place, resulting in the usual reams of information. Regrettably, despite my incredibly enticing no-expenses-paid offer to AG staff, none of us were able to attend in person. As with previous years, however, we plan to partner with the German team at Adventure-Treff to provide you with as much in-depth post-GC coverage that we can. The only problem is, despite my equally enticing suggestion that they start writing in English, the AT gang will once again be cranking out their fine articles in German.

That's where you come in.

We're fortunate enough to already have a couple fine translators on board, but it's a lot of work that we'd love to spread around to more volunteers if possible. More people means even more coverage, or at least coverage that isn't still being finished up next April.

So here I am, hat in hand with an even-more-enticing-than-usual appeal for German to English translators willing and able to help us prepare some GC preview articles over the next few weeks. It's an unpaid position, I'm afraid, but just think of all the warm fuzzies you'll get from freely giving of your time! And if that's not enough, you'll of course be fully credited for your work, and you'll become someone "in the know" with early access to upcoming titles, not to mention having the once-in-a-lifetime (or as often as you're willing to do it) opportunity to work closely with me. But PLEASE don't hold that last little nugget against the job. Others have done it and lived to tell the tale.

The more the merrier for all those interested, but please be sure you're fluent in both languages, as we still want to apply our usual standards of quality to these translations. You can email me directly at [email protected] (not you, spambots) or through the site contact form.

By the way, we haven't forgotten about the blog, promise. There just seems to be a universal law governing the inverse proportion of good intentions and actual time for fulfilling them. But we're trying, so stay tuned for more sparse, sporadic entries in future! (Or "less" sparse and sporadic, depending on how you look at it.)
