archived preview: Boyz Don't Cry
Looking like it should be on the television, Boyz Don't Cry is a strangely-titled, yet gorgeous-looking, new cartoon third-person adventure from Polish developers L'Art. And, with its distinctive appearance, the developers could be onto a real winner here. Helping to set the game apart from other 2D works are the game's cutscenes. Rather than being fully animated, as in most games, they have been done in a comic book style – an individual touch, and one with definite potential. Boyz Don't Cry is also set to be a good length, with five hours of dialogue, fifty characters and an equal number of locations providing plenty of bang for your buck, all part of a sizable-sounding five-hundred page screenplay. Interface-wise, it's business as usual, so old-school adventure gamers should feel at home with this particular title. In fact, the whole game is what you'd expect from one of the classic adventures of yore, and that's certainly no bad thing. In fact, it makes rather a refreshing change from what we're quickly having to become used to, and so should definitely be a game to watch out for. As far as getting the game published is concerned, negotiations are ongoing. With support from the European Commission, a UK release is extremely likely, and this only really leaves a question mark over America. Will there be a publisher prepared to take the risk of bringing a 2D game like Boyz Don't Cry to trans-Atlantic shores? Here's hoping, because it really is looking decidedly special – graphically stunning, more than a little quirky and, most importantly, genuinely funny. Head on over to the official website for more information, and keep checking Adventure Gamers for news on this one – it could just become one of the classicz.
