I recently searched for a nice picture of Medusa, to use as my avatar.

And I found this:

The painting is called "Medusa" and is by Victor Nizovtsev.

I saw some other paintings by him, and I love them.

Hunh. When I saw it as your avatar, I would have sworn it was Klimt (well, sworn, as in--randomly guessed.) Full scale, I can see the difference--the face doesn't look right for Klimt, but still, some kind of influence seems there. Do you know their relationship, if any? I could look it up--but it's easier being lazy.

No, sorry. I don't know the relationship between the two.

Not even Wikipedia has an article about him.

But he seems to draw mythological things, and things like harlequins (not kitschy ones, that is.) and a group of paintings called "Time" that have a layout a bit like a playing card.

This painting is called The Temptation of Saint Anthony.

It is a wonderful piece, but has always freaked me out. Salvadors work is truly the stuff of dreams.

Wow Jaz. I love the face on that painting. There is something very earthy about it. Post more of that guy if you have some!

By the way, I found something on a page that sells the original paintings.

Quote:
"Victor Nizovtsev was born on August 29, 1965 in a region known as Ulan-Ude, next to Lake Baical in Russia. His family moved to the Republic of Moldava when Victor was young. He grew up in the town of Hincesti, 30 miles southeast of the capital of Moldava, Chisinau. At age seven he entered Hincesti's Art School for Children where he studied for five years. In the 9th grade, Victor left home to study at Ilia Replin School for Art in Chisinau. His university plans were interrupted when he left for a mandatory two-year stint in the army where his talents were used to paint military plans and pro-military billboards. After the army he entered the prestigious Vera Muhina University for Industrial Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1993 Victor finished his degree as fashion designer and decorative painter. He then returned to Hincesti where he began painting for galleries in St. Petersburg and Chisinau. Victor presently resides in the United States."

That isn't technically a painting, now, is it...

I think that a computer-generated, prerendered image can be called a painting... Well, I love it anyway.

Oh, I'm not saying that I don't like it - quite the opposite - but I felt the need to be petty. I'm in one of those moods ...

I just interpreted the term "painting" very broadly, perhaps.

Harbinger by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law.

I love her art. She draws wonderful dream-like things, and she has great talent.

The unicorn in my avatar is a watercolour painting she did for a book cover.
